Step into the digital world this Ramadan, where tech-savvy individuals are redefining tradition with a modern twist.

Unlike last year’s post-pandemic atmosphere, this time around, the digital-savvy crowd seems more confident to dive into various activities during Ramadan.

From starting businesses, going on vacations, to sprucing up their homes, their behavior is causing a shift in how they manage their Eid allowances (THR) in 2024 compared to 2023, especially in terms of spending, saving, and investing.

According to a survey ‘Tech-Savvy Community Behavior During Ramadan and Leading Up to Eid al-Fitr 2024,’ conducted from February 28 to March 18, 2024. The survey involved 233 respondents aged 17–40 from various regions in Indonesia.

The survey results paint a picture of this year’s tech-savvy community behavior, focusing on enhancing worship quality, better managing THR, and strengthening family ties by gathering with loved ones.

There’s been a shift in THR allocation this year compared to last year, where the majority of tech-savvy individuals (41 percent) focused on saving their THR, while 40 percent used it for Ramadan shopping, and 19 percent invested it.

This change in THR management aligns with 58 percent expenses might increase this Ramadan. These expenses are divided into several categories, including buying new clothes (43 percent), traveling to hometowns (30 percent), zakat and charity (30 percent), buying suhoor and iftar meals (29 percent), and hosting iftar gatherings (29 percent).

In addition to Ramadan needs, they are also using their THR to pay off debts, fund businesses, go on vacations, renovate their homes, and purchase gadgets/electronic items.

Furthermore, they are preempting extra needs by opting for loans. Compared to last year, the number of tech-savvy individuals opting for loans increased by 13 percent. According to the survey results, 35 percent of them plan to take out loans during this Ramadan for various purposes, including preparing for Eid celebrations (60 percent), business capital (46 percent), and home renovations (18 percent).

As the digital-savvy community navigates Ramadan with a blend of tradition and innovation, one thing is clear: the essence of the season remains unchanged. Whether it’s through enhancing worship, strengthening familial bonds, or embracing financial strategies, this tech-infused Ramadan serves as a testament to the adaptive spirit of the modern era.
